Overveiw of Cold War

The Cold War was a war between the Soviet Union and America that never really involved any fighting. The only instance where fighting almost broke out was the Cuban Missile Crisis. The war was pretty much a debate over who was more powerful- the United States or the Soviet Union, and they tried to prove their power through the production of nuclear weapons and the gain of allies, causing a split between Eastern and Western Europe. The United States also wanted to fight communism and keep it from spreading. It ended up resulting in World War two when Truman dropped an atomic bomb.

What Is NATO?

NATO, (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization), was(and still is) an alliance between the United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom created in 1949 to stop the spread of communism and the rising nationalist militarism in Europe. The formation of this alliance hoped to guardthe freedom and security of its members through political and military means. Politically, NATO promoted democratic values and cooperation on defense and security issues. In doing so, they aspired to build trust within members which would hopefully prevent conflict in the long run. Militarily, NATO was a peaceful alliance which aimed for peaceful revolutions, however, if that fails, military efforts will step in. Because it is made up of so many members, NATO has the military capacity to successfully act on any threat or crisis that may arise.

If one of NATO's memebers is attacked or threatended, every member will aid in helping. “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.” – Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which was the Treaty holding NATO together.

What is the Warsaw Pact?

The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance of East Europe's communist countries. These nations included Bulgaria, Czechosolvakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union.   It was made in direct response to the formation of NATO.  The formation of the warsaw pact put the soviets in charge of their members armed forces. Like NATO, if one member of the alliance was threatened, all would help in defending as a whole. The two incharge of any military feats were Marsgal Ivan and S. Konev. One of the reasons it was inacted was because of NATO's claim of West Germany and the formation was mainly focused on this. Later on, some countries, like albania, left the warsaw pact because of the growing Marxist control. The Warsaw pact dissolved in 1991.
